STREAM

STREAM Mission:

St. Anthony’s STREAM program is a cross-curricular approach to 21st century education in which students engage in hands-on, inquiry-based learning to strengthen their knowledge in core subject areas while developing essential problem-solving skills.

Philosophy:

With our Catholic Identity at its core, our STREAM program allows students to develop a sense of who they are and the role they play in the world around them.  Students are encouraged to ask questions and take chances in a safe and nurturing environment.  By integrating Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics into all matters of school life we help our students become true 21st century learners. St. Anthony students are challenged to develop critical-thinking skills that allow them to identify challenges in their community and utilize their core subject knowledge to develop

meaningful and lasting solutions to those challenges.

St. Anthony STREAM Students...

ask questions and find their own solutions.

creatively solve problems in a real-world setting.

see failure as a stepping stone to success.

understand their personal value in relation to the global community.

At St. Anthony, we pride ourselves on our endeavor for continued growth and academic excellence.  Our school was built to support twenty-first century learning through STEM education.  In focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics we challenge our students to be critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and effective communicators. All of our students, in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade regularly participate in STEM lessons and activities that encourage higher-level thinking and help them develop essential 21st century skills. STEM lessons actively engage students in creating and engineering solutions for and answers to real-world questions. These lessons integrate and apply science and math grade-level content while involving students in understanding, using, and creating technologies.

Our STEM activities are enhanced by our integration of the arts and our Catholic Identity to create our unique STREAM Program. With our Catholic Identity at its core, our STREAM program allows students to develop a sense of who they are and the role they play in the world around them.  Students are encouraged to ask questions and take chances in a safe and nurturing environment. We encourage our students to put their knowledge and talents into use through their service to others. Our students are taught to use their knowledge to create a positive impact on the world around them, based on the strong foundation they have established in their faith.

In addition to integrating our religious values and practices into our learning processes, students also grow in knowledge and appreciation of the arts. The Kennedy Center defines arts integration as "an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process which connects an art form and another subject and meets evolving objectives in both."  We view the arts as a vehicle for creative thinking and problem solving as well as valuable entities in themselves. By teaching our students through various art forms they not only engage in creative processes but also gain an appreciation for the various art forms.  St. Anthony is proud to be a Model School in the Mississippi Whole Schools Initiative, Mississippi’s first comprehensive state-wide arts education program that uses the arts to promote high-quality instruction and learning for students in all disciplines.
